The Shatin to Central Link Project is a crucial part of the extensive Rail Gen 2.0 project. Currently, 80% of the overall project has been completed.
The first phase, "The Tai Wai to Hung Hom section", of Shatin to Central Link Project is expected to commence service in mid-2019 with eight stations. The West Rail Line will link up with the Ma On Shan Line through East Kowloon. When the second phase is completed, passengers will have another option to cross the harbour, and will be able to travel from Hung Hom to Admiralty in about five minutes.
The Shatin to Central Link Project is a true marvel of engineering, but the tunnel construction posed huge challenges. Not only does it pass through densely populated areas, but it also goes under the harbour. The engineers have had to use a variety of techniques, such as tunnel boring machines and immersed tubes, to cope with the different geological conditions, and minimise the impact of the construction work on peopleˇ¦s daily lives
