Passenger Guide for South Island Line

Starting from 28th December 2016, the MTR will open the new South Island Line from Admiralty to the Southern District, connecting Ocean Park, Wong Chuk Hang, Lei Tung and South Horizons. This extension means that the MTR now offers direct links to all 18 districts in Hong Kong and offers a comprehensive network of fully integrated services for a new generation of rail travel called Rail Gen 2.0.

Fully Automatic Operation

South Island Line is a medium capacity railway system with 3-car trains; each train consists of three compartments and operates under the Fully Automatic Operation system. The train adopts an open design without driving cab. Passengers can enjoy themselves in the spacious area, and enjoy an unobstructed view of the beautiful scenery through the windscreens.

During most emergencies, train service could be resumed via reset of train and automatic recovery supported by control from Operations Control Centre so that the stability of train service can be enhanced.

Operations Control Centre also can arrange spare trains to serve passengers to cater for any upsurge in patronage.

The Fully Automatic Operation system is a mature technology that has been adopted by railway networks all over the world, including the Disneyland Resort Line since 2005.

Journey Time

Simply hop on the train of South Island Line at Admiralty Station and get to Ocean Park Station in 4 minutes*, and South Horizons Station in 11 minutes*, and avoid traffic congestion at street level.

The estimated journey time between South Island Line stations and other stations will be available from the Train Trip Planner in MTR Mobile or www.mtr.com.hk beginning on the opening day of the South Island Line's operations.

The frequency of trains will be approximately every 3 minutes during peak hours. Schedule of first and last trains for the South Island Line:

Bringing communities together

Ocean Park Station

There are three entrances, with Entrance B connected to the entrance of plaza of Ocean Park via the dedicated footbridge on the same level. Limited parking facilities are provided at ground level for drivers.

Wong Chuk Hang Station

There are two entrances for this station. A footbridge is located at Entrance B, which connects Nam Long Shan Road Cooked Food Market, Wong Chuk Hang Road and Yip Kan Street, and allows direct access to nearby industrial and commercial areas by foot.

Lei Tung Station

There are three entrances with Entrance B at Lei Tung Commercial Centre providing dedicated lift access connecting the ¡¥unpaid¡¦ pedestrian subway. People can travel conveniently between Ap Lei Chau Main Street, Ap Lei Chau Bridge Road and Lei Tung Estate.

South Horizons Station

There are three entrances for this station. The new footbridge and external lift are situated at Entrance A, connecting Ap Lei Chau Estate and South Horizons. Entrance C offers two external lifts to link up the ground level station concourse.

Interchange for 3 MTR lines easily at Admiralty

Passengers travelling along the South Island Line, Tsuen Wan Line and Island Line can interchange at Admiralty Station. Simply follow the coloured signs in the station to access the platform of the South Island Line on L6.

Introducing Mobile Service Mode for tailored convenience

The South Island Line will adopt Mobile Service Mode at those South Island Line Stations without a Customer Service Centre. Mobile Service Team will rove around the stations, while train operations staff will remain on the trains providing timely and more proactive assistance to passengers.

Self Service Point (SSP)

The multi-function SSP provide one-stop service to serve different needs*:

  • Handle ticketing issues such as excess fare payment, lost and problematic tickets or Octopus, etc.
  • Purchase a Single Journey Ticket and MTR City Saver (SSP in unpaid area)
  • Add value on Octopus and check transaction history
  • Contact staff through the video conference system

* To purchase Octopus or any of its related products, and enquiries on other ticketing refunds, please visit Ocean Park Station or any MTR Customer Service Centre for assistance.

Information Counter

The new information counter* is located in the unpaid area of the station concourse. Tablets are integrated into the counter to provide information on the station and MTR routes to streamline passengers' journeys.

Enjoy a wide choice of money-saving offers

Interchange Discounts

Passengers with an Adult Octopus Card can enjoy fare discounts when interchanging between six designated Green Minibus routes and the MTR.

* The interchange discount is applicable to GMB fares equivalent to $7.3 or above.

MTR City Saver

The MTR City Saver now covers all four new South Island Line stations. The ticket is valid for 40 single journeys within 30 days for just $425.

Early Bird Discounts

Early Bird discounts are available from Monday to Friday (except public holidays), from 7:15 am to 8:15 am. Early bird passengers travelling at these times with an Adult Octopus card can enjoy a 25% fare discount at any of the 35 designated stations (including Ocean Park, Wong Chuk Hang, Lei Tung and South Horizons stations).
