IMPORTANT NOTE :MTR STUDENT TRAVEL SCHEME (ACADEMIC YEAR 2023 / 2024)

 

Eligibility


An applicant for a Personalised Octopus must be a student under the following definitions::

"Student" refers to any person between the ages of 12 and 25 who is currently enrolled in a full-time day course offered by an acceptable institution in Hong Kong. Students who have not yet reached 26 may apply. An applicant's age is determined by the date the application is submitted.

"Full-time day course" refers to a day-time course, which normally requires the participant to attend an acceptable local institution for not fewer than 20 hours of academic instruction each week for 30 weeks or more in an academic year.

"Acceptable institution" refers to :

  • schools referred to in Section 2 of the Education Ordinance (Cap279);
  • registered schools that fall under Section 3 of the Education Ordinance (Cap279);
  • schools exempted from the Education Ordinance (Cap279) under sections 9(1)(a) and (1)(b);
  • the word school is defined in Section 3 of the Education Ordinance (Cap279);
  • other schools as occasionally approved by the MTR Corporation;
  • private schools offering non-formal curriculum registered under the Education Ordinance (Cap279) are not included.

Special Schools Subject to the curriculum For curriculum similar to the ‘Class’ listed above, the validity granted will be the same as the associated class, but will not be earlier than 31 October 2026 (whichever validity is longer). For other classes / curricula, the expiry date is 31 October 2026.

Enjoying concessionary fares when travelling on the MTR


An adult fare must be paid by any student aged 12 or above when travelling on the MTR without :

  • using a Personalised Octopus or Personalised Mobile Octopus with valid "Student Status", or
  • Concessionary Single Journey Tickets are not available for use by students aged 12 or above. Students may only use a Personalised Octopus or Personalised Mobile Octopus with "Student Status" if they wish to benefit from paying concessionary fares in the MTR (Airport Express, or MTR Feeder Bus; or travel to Lo Wu, or Lok Ma Chau stations are not included).
  • The "Student Status" encoded on a Personalised Octopus or Personalised Mobile Octopus is valid for MTR travel only. Users of a Personalised Octopus or Personalised Mobile Octopus encoded with "Student Status" (including aged 12 or under) are reminded that when they travel on any non-MTR transport with this Octopus, they are liable to the individual terms and conditions of the respective transport provider and may be charged full adult fare.
  • A special Add-Value amount of HK$10 in each transaction is available at all MTR Customer Service Centres for students using a Personalised Octopus or Personalised Mobile Octopus encoded with "Student Status".

Report loss of a Personalised Octopus or Personalised Mobile Octopus with "Student Status"

  • If your Personalised Octopus or Personalised Mobile Octopus is lost or stolen, you must report it immediately to the Card Company by calling the Lost Octopus Reporting Hotline on 2266 2266. You may ask for a replacement Personalised Octopus or Personalised Mobile Octopus to be issued.

Transfer to school

Students who transfer to another school may submit the online application with new student proof or download a form from MTR website and submit the form at any MTR Customer Service Centre^.

^Except Airport Express stations, Lo Wu, Lok Ma Chau, Racecourse, Disneyland Resort, Sunny Bay, Wong Chuk Hang, Lei Tung , South Horizons, Hin Keng, Kai Tak, Sung Wong Toi and To Kwa Wan stations

Termination of studies / Change in personal data

  • If you cease to be a full-time day course student, your "Student Status" becomes invalid.
  • If there is any change in your “Student Status” or your personal data, you must immediately contact the MTR Hotline on 2881 8888.

New Application [1] - Need to obtain a Personalised Octopus (with photo)

Reminder:

  • Students who do not possess a Personalised Octopus (with name and photo printed on the Octopus) and who wish to enjoy MTR concessionary fares, must apply MTR Student Travel Scheme and select application type- New Application [1] - Need to obtain a Personalised Octopus (with photo).

Application fee

The application fee of HK$90 includes the Octopus deposit of HK$50; a non-refundable fee of HK$20 charged by MTR Corporation Limited for administering the MTR Student Travel Scheme; and a non-refundable service charge of HK$20 payable to Octopus Cards Limited.

FIRST TIME APPLICANTS# will receive a rebate from the MTR Corporation Limited in the form of HK$20 usable value encoded on the Personalised Octopus.

If your Personalised Octopus is given back to the Card Company at any time, the Card Company is entitled to deduct HK$10 or such amount at its absolute discretion from the Octopus deposit to cover the Octopus cost.

Hardcopy Form Application

Applicants can download an application form from this web page or obtain the form [MTR Student Travel Scheme Application Form (Academic year 2023 / 2024)] at any MTR Customer Service Centre^ or the Concessionary Travel Office in Admiralty, Tai Wai, or Siu Hong stations from 1 September 2023 and submit the completed application form together with photo and application fee to any MTR Customer Service Center^ within 14 days after obtaining the school chop. A receipt will be issued when submit the application form.

New Octopus Collection

Upon accepted application, you will receive a notification letter with the new Personalised Octopus delivered by Octopus Cards Limited within 4 to 6 weeks from the Date of Application.

Please follow the instructions in the letter to activate the new Octopus and “Student Status” through Octopus App. You can also carry the letter, your identity documents and new Octopus to go to any MTR Customer Service Centre@ for Octopus activation.

If you do not receive this letter from Octopus Cards Limited 6 weeks after your completion of application and payment, please contact Octopus Customer Service Hotline at +852 2266 2222.

Reminder:

  • If your "Student Status" expires on 31 October 2023 and is not Renewed, full adult fares will be deducted from your Personalised Octopus or Personalised Mobile Octopus when you travel on the MTR.
  • "Student Status" cannot be encoded on Airport Staff Octopus or Disney Staff Octopus or Personalised Octopus with "Persons with Disabilities Status" or Octopus watches or Personalised Octopus printed only with the applicant's name but no photo.

Application fee

An administration fee of HK$20 is payable when your Personalised Octopus or Personalised Mobile Octopus is successfully Activated / Renewed.

Applicants can also put the application form into the MTR Student Travel Scheme collection box next to the MTR Customer Service Centre^ between 1 September and 14 October 2023.

New Application [2] - Already carrying a Personalised Octopus (with photo)

You can use the Octopus App or go to any MTR Customer Service Centre^ to activate the “Student Status” on the Personalised Octopus within 2 to 4 weeks upon successful application.

Renewal Application

You can activate the “Student Status” on the Personalised Octopus or Personalised Mobile Octopus within 2 to 4 weeks upon successful application using the following method:

After activation of “Student Status”, you can check the validity of the “Student Status” encoded on your Personalised Octopus or Personalised Mobile Octopus at any MTR Customer Service Centre* or through any Octopus Enquiry Processor in MTR stations.
