The Geopark covers about 5,000 hectares and is made up of eight areas across the Northeast New Territories sedimentary rock region and Sai Kung volcanic rock region. The hexagonal columns are acidic silica-rich rhyolitic volcanic rock, covering an area of over 100 km2 (including sea area) and average diameter of 1.2 m, making them outrival similar columns in the world.
