living art

Music and theatrical performances bring artistic expression to life at MTR stations in a rich variety of entertaining ways through the "living art" programme, first launched in October 2004.

Every Friday evening from 6:00 pm to 6:45 pm, the Central Subway of Hong Kong Station becomes a stage for professional artists and amateur performers to share their diverse abilities and talents.

Performances include everything from modern pop and hip hop music to classical performances, traditional Chinese music, theatre and dance. There are also special performances during festive periods.

Members of the public can stop by to relax, take a break from the pressure of city life and enjoy "living art".

"living art" Performance Snapshots

A Cappella Performance

A 19th century form of music a cappella is enjoying renewed interest in Hong Kong and a series of a cappella performances were held through the "art in mtr - living art" programme at Hong Kong Station. Meaning 'in the style of the chapel' in Italian, a cappella is a vocal performance without the accompaniment of musical instruments. Instead, the performers emulate the sounds of instruments with their voices and microphones.

Modern Dance

A group of energetic dancers from JUMP performed street jazz, jazz funk and contemporary dance, expressing the buzz of city life and dreams through the rhythmic dance performance. Their show attracted a large crowd of spectators to gather in the Central Subway.

Exploring Lesser-known Musical Instruments

Three amateur musicians performing on the ruan, liuyeqin and sheng. They were amongst 30 musicians playing on a number of lesser-known Chinese and Western musical instruments.

SAR-Subway, Action & Rhinoceros

In the inaugural "art in mtr - living art" performance, members of the Prospects Theatre entertained the after-work crowd with their "SAR-Subway, Action & Rhinoceros" show.

Chinese Folk Dance

"Dancing queens" in the MTR: members of the Hong Kong Dance Company perform with graceful Chinese Long Sleeves.

Variety Show

A group of talented students from the Buddhist Ching Kok Secondary School put on a variety show with "Animal of the future" fashion show, singing and ensemble performance.
