Introduction
The MTR Corporation was established in 1975 to construct and operate, under prudent commercial principles, a mass transit railway system, that aims at satisfying the needs of the travelling public in Hong Kong. It became the MTR Corporation Limited on 30 June 2000 to facilitate the partial privatization of the corporation by the government.
Railway Construction
Since 1979, the MTR has planned and completed nine major railway construction projects, each on time and within budget.
Performances
The MTR currently operates two types of services, an urban mass transit service and a dedicated express service to the Airport, carrying average 3.4 million passengers per weekday, providing a highly reliable and safe railway system. Over the last two decades, the MTR has also implemented a programme to renew and upgrade the railway infrastructure and systems geared to improve customer service and operational efficiency. The 2007 performance pledge promised the public 99.5% train service availability and delivery. Performance surpassed the target. In terms of revenue, the MTR has consistently achieved over 50% operating surplus enabling capital investment to be recovered and thus making the MTR one of the few metros in the world which is profitable.
Non-Fare Revenues
Besides railway operations, the Corporation is also active in the development of key residential and commercial properties above existing stations and along new line extensions, as well as many other commercial activities associated with the railway. These include rental of retail and advertising space, ATM banking facilities and personal telecommunication services.
