MTR Facilities For Passengers With Disabilities


New and Improved Facilities Mean Better Service for All Our Customers

 We are striving to improve access and facilities for all our passengers - not only those with disabilities, but the elderly, people traveling with babies or small children, and those who need step-free access. We are making improvements to many of our existing stations, and all our future lines will incorporate easy access facilities.

Facilities for Visually Impaired Passengers

  • TACTILE GUIDE PATHS are installed at all stations (except Racecourse and Light Rail stops).
  • MODIFICATION OF OBSTRUCTIONS such as litter bins, payphones and fare maps making them more easily detectable to cane users has been completed in all stations.
  • ESCALATOR AUDIBLE SIGNALS are installed in all stations to help passengers locate escalators at platform and/or concourse level.
    In addition a new type of escalator audible device identifying the location and the travel direction has been installed at Tsim Sha Tsui, Mong Kok, Yau Ma Tei, Shek Kip Mei, Lok Fu, Kwun Tong, Tsuen Wan, Cheung Sha Wan, Ngau Tau Kok, Kowloon Bay, Kwai Fong, Kwai Hing, Tai Wo Hau, Jordan, Mei Foo, Kowloon Tong, Lam Tin, Prince Edward, Chai Wan, Diamond Hill, Choi Hung, Lai Chi Kok, Lai King, Central, Wong Tai Sin, Sham Shui Po, Heng Fa Chuen, Admiralty, Shau Kei Wan, Causeway Bay, Wan Chai, Tin Hau, Fortress Hill, North Point, Yau Tong, Tiu Keng Leng, Tseung Kwan O, Hang Hau, Po Lam, Sai Wan Ho, Tai Koo, Quarry Bay, Sheung Wan, Hong Kong, Kowloon, Olympic, Nam Cheong, Tsing Yi, Sunny Bay, Tung Chung, Airport, AsiaWorld-Expo and Disneyland Resort stations.
  • PLATFORM TACTILE YELLOW LINES are installed in all stations without Platform Screen Doors.
  • TACTILE STATION LAYOUT MAPS are installed at all stations along the East Rail Line, West Rail Line and Ma On Shan Line, as well as at Shek Kip Mei, Kowloon Tong, Kowloon Bay, Kwun Tong, Mei Foo, Wan Chai, Lok Fu, Prince Edward, Tai Koo, Causeway Bay, Kwai Hing, Wong Tai Sin, Shau Kei Wan, Heng Fa Chuen, Chai Wan, Jordan, Kwai Fong, Ngau Tau Kok, Choi Hung, Airport, Yau Tong, Tiu Keng Leng, Tseung Kwan O, Hang Hau and Po Lam stations.
  • An AUDIBLE DEVICE in the exit gate that is reached by the tactile guide path has been installed in all stations along the Tsuen Wan Line, Island Line, Kwun Tong Line, Tseung Kwan O Line, Tung Chung Line, Airport Express Line and East Rail Line (except for East Tsim Sha Tsui, Tai Wai, Lo Wu and Lok Ma Chau) providing audible Octopus Card readings.
  • BRAILLE plates have been installed on Ticket Issuing Machines (not Light Rail) and Add Value Machines, and in public toilets, lifts in certain stations and Platform Card Processors at Light Rail stops.
  • COLOR CONTRAST GRAB POLES are provided inside the compartments of certain trains.
  • A BUZZER sounds when the train door is closing.
  • COLOUR CONTRAST INTER-CAR BARRIERS are fitted in some trains to prevent passengers stepping on to the track between the train carriages.
Facilities for Hearing Impaired Passengers
  • INDUCTION LOOPS to assist hearing aid users are installed at all Customer Service Centres, Ticket Offices and selected payphones.
  • INFORMATION CARDS to facilitate communication between staff and passengers are available at all Customer Service Centers (except Light Rail stops).
  • PASSENGER INFORMATION DISPLAY SYSTEMS are installed at most station entrances, concourses and platforms.
  • FLASHING SYSTEM MAPS showing the location and direction of the train are installed on trains on Kwun Tong Line, Tsuen Wan Line, Island Line and Tseung Kwan O Line.
  • ACTIVE LINE DIAGRAMS are installed in Airport Express and Tung Chung Line trains.
  • ON TRAIN INFORMATION
    INFOPANELS display next station information and operational messages in Kwun Tong Line, Tsuen Wan Line, Island Line and Tseung Kwan O Line trains, whilst NEWSLINE EXPRESS screens display the next station and operational messages in trains on East Rail Line, West Rail Line and Ma On Shan Line.
Facilities for Mobility Impaired Passengers
  • MULTI-USE SPACES are provided in all trains.
  • WIDE GATES allowing wheelchair users and passengers with baby prams / baggage to pass into or out of the paid area without staff assistance are provided at all stations (except Hung Hom, Mong Kok East, Sha Tin, Fo Tan, Racecourse, University, Tai Po Market, Tai Wo, Fanling and Sheung Shui).
  • PORTABLE or MOVABLE RAMPS allowing wheelchair users to move easily between the platform and train are provided at all stations (except Light Rail stops).
