Integrated Single Journey Ticketing System Trial Completed
Interchange Ticket Gates Removal Starts on 26 October

The MTR Corporation today (20 October 2008) announced that the Trial of the Integrated Single Journey Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) System introduced on 28 September 2008 has verified that the new computer software is functioning smoothly and reliably. The Corporation would now proceed to permanently remove the 100 interchange ticket gates at the three interchange stations to bring about truly seamless travel in the MTR network. The works began at Kowloon Tong Station on 26 October 2008, followed by Mei Foo at a later date and then Nam Cheong Station. The whole gate removal programme will take about three weeks to complete.

At Kowloon Tong and Mei Foo stations, public announcements will be made regularly reminding passengers to follow "Yellow for interchange". More than 150 Customer Service Ambassadors wearing yellow T-shirts will also be on hand to assist passengers at the two stations.
More information about the upcoming changes is available through exhibitions at station concourses to be held from 21 October 2008. Location specific notices will be on display at Kowloon Tong Station and Mei Foo Station to inform passengers of the changes at that particular location. In addition, information leaflets and flyers introducing the new seamless travel arrangements at Kowloon Tong Station and Mei Foo Station are available at the respective stations and have been sent to nearby offices, schools and residential buildings.

New Interior, Greater Comfort for Airport Express Passengers

Starting from 22 October 2008, Airport Express passengers will soon enjoy a new-look environment and a more comfortable journey, thanks to a HK$27 million refurbishment programme for the interior of Airport Express trains.

The MTR Corporation will be replacing seat cushions, seat covers and carpets for the entire Airport Express fleet of 11 trains. The first refurbished train has come into service on 22 October 2008 while work on the remaining 10 will be completed by mid-2009.

The vivid purple and green seat covers will complement the carpeting which will be in royal blue. These vibrant and energetic colours will brighten up the train interiors and provide a refreshing and modernized feel. They also match the colour scheme of the Airport Express train exteriors.

Another improvement is the provision of mobile phone charging facilities on the Airport Express platform at Hong Kong Station. Passengers finding their mobile phones low on power can top up their batteries during the few minutes between trains so that they never have to worry about missing an important call. The facilities are being offered on a trial basis to gauge demand.

Successful Start for Interchange Ticket Gates Removal Works

In the early hours of the morning on 26 October 2008, 13 interchange ticket gates in the East Rail Line Northern Concourse of Kowloon Tong Station were permanently removed.

Interchanging passengers alighting trains on Platform 2 (East Tsim Sha Tsui-bound direction) are now experiencing truly seamless travel. Other than not having to pass their Octopus cards over processors or insert Single Journey Tickets into the ticket gate slots, there are no gates to block their way. Instead, there is a wide open passageway decorated in yellow to enable passengers to walk even more comfortably and effortlessly to transfer to the Kwun Tong Line.

More than 150 ambassadors have been deployed at the station to hold up bright yellow signs reminding passengers to follow "Yellow for interchange" and not to exit unless their destination is Kowloon Tong.
The removal of 100 interchange ticket gates at Kowloon Tong, Mei Foo and Nam Cheong stations will take about three weeks to complete.
