Important Notice for All Passengers

  1. The primary objective of ticket inspections is to ensure that honest, fare-paying passengers do not have to subsidise fare evaders. Ticket inspections may be carried out inside Light Rail compartments or at stops/on station platforms. When travelling, please ensure that you always have a validated Octopus Card or a valid single ride ticket ready for inspection at any time.

  2. Octopus Cards and Single Journey Tickets are valid for 120 minutes after their validation or issuance. During this time, passengers must travel from the stop where the Octopus Card was validated or the ticket issued to another stop in a single direction without repeating any stop. Unless interchanging between a Light Rail route during a single journey, passengers must re-validate their Octopus Cards or buy an additional Single Journey Ticket when making an additional trip.

  3. Children aged over 3 but under 12 must purchase a Child Ticket. All passengers aged 12 or above must travel on a valid Adult Ticket. People aged 65 or above are entitled to use Senior Citizen Tickets. Single adult passengers who are accompanied by more than two children under three years of age must buy Child Tickets for the third child onwards.

  4. Single Journey Tickets are only valid for travelling to one other stop within the two fare zones in the direction printed on the ticket. Any passenger who wishes to travel to another stop beyond these two fare zones or not covered by the direction printed on the ticket, must buy an additional Single Journey Ticket.

  5. The Light Rail's Passenger Services Assistants are authorised to enforce the North West Railway By-laws. Any passenger breaching one or more of these By-laws must produce proof of his/her identity and personal particulars when requested to do so. All collection of personal data from By-laws offenders is fully complied with the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance.

  6. Any passenger found travelling without a validated Octopus Card or a valid Single Journey Ticket will be liable to pay a surcharge of up to (50 times the prevailing maximum adult single fare) and may be subject to prosecution.

  7. Pursuant to the Octopus Conditions of Issue, Personalised Octopus Cards are not transferable and may only be used by the registered Cardholder.

  8. To enjoy MTR (West Rail Line) and/or MTR Feeder Bus ("Bus") interchange concessions, passengers travelling with an Octopus Card must satisfy the following conditions:

    1. Interchanges between Light Rail and the MTR (West Rail Line): Must be made within 30 minutes of the Octopus Card's validation at a Light Rail or MTR exit processor.

    2. Interchanges between Light Rail/MTR (West Rail Line) and Buses: Must be made within 60 minutes of transferring to or from the Light Rail/MTR (West Rail Line) and Bus after validating the Octopus Card at the Light Rail/MTR (West Rail Line) exit or bus processor.

    3. Interchanges between Light Rail/Bus to MTR (West Rail Line) and back to the Light Rail/Bus: The full journey must be completed within 120 minutes.

For full details of interchange concessions, please refer to specific publication.

  9. Passengers found damaging railway premises, buses or trains, or obstructing a Light Rail official in the course of his/her duties will be liable to prosecution.

  10. No dangerous goods, bulky items of luggage, objects exceeding a total measurement (length+width+height) of 170cm or over 130 cm on any other side should be carried onto Light Rail premises, buses or trains. The same rules apply to any other item a Light Rail official deems likely to inconvenience other passengers. Light Rail officials can refuse to admit any passenger carrying such items onto any Light Rail premises or vehicle. Passengers on railway premises who refuse to comply with the instructions of a Light Rail official may be liable to prosecution.

  11. It is prohibited to smoke, eat, drink, litter or spit in any part of Light Rail premises, buses or trains.

  12. Hawking and touting are prohibited on Light Rail premises, buses and trains. Offenders will be prosecuted.

  13. For public safety, no person is allowed to gain access to the railway track area or to enter or leave the platform other than by using the designated entrances or exits. Offenders will be prosecuted.

  14. No person shall use abusive language, or behave in an offensive manner while upon Light Rail premises, buses or trains.

  15. With the exception of police officers' duty dogs and registered guide dogs for the blind, no animals, pets or livestock are allowed on Light Rail premises, buses or trains.

  16. While on Light Rail premises or travelling on a Light Rail bus or train, all passengers must comply with all notices, indications, directions and requests issued by Light Rail officials.
