Conservation of Tree Walls and all Old and Valuable Trees is a top priority
The conservation of tree walls and the Old and Valuable Trees in Central and Western District has been taken into consideration since the preliminary design stage of West Island Line (WIL) Project. Extensive protection measures will be employed during project construction to avoid any impact on them.
The Corporation also treasures the urban landscape and ecological values of all trees, especially large trees. Impacts on trees will be kept to a minimum. If impacts on trees are unavoidable, transplanting will be considered as the first option.
During the construction period of WIL, a certified arborist will be employed to oversee all arboriculture works in West Island Line Project.
Forbes Street Tree Walls
Trees growing on masonry stone walls are a special landscape in Hong Kong. There used to be a lot of tree walls in Hong Kong; but due to urban development, many of them have been damaged. The tree walls on Forbes Street are probably over 100 years old and are of high urban landscape value and high historical value.

In order to preserve these valuable tree walls, the location of the Kennedy Town Station was shifted eastwards from the original location underneath Forbes Street Playground and the tree walls to the a location underneath the existing Kennedy Town Swimming Pool.

Trees walls in the King George V Memorial Park will also be preserved.
Guidelines of protection measures on the wall trees have been developed by Professor C.Y. Jim of the University of Hong Kong. Special protections of the wall trees will be taken during the construction. Conditions of the trees will be closely monitored. A certified arborist will be employed to oversee all the trees.
Old and Valuable Trees
All Old and Valuable Trees inside or near the work site boundaries will be preserved, including three Chinese Banyans in the King George V Memorial Park (LCSD CW/16, LCSD CW/19, LCSD CW/20) and the Chinese Banyan on Bonham Road outside David Trench Rehabilitation Centre (LCSD CW/15).

Special protection measures as stated in the EIA report will be implemented during construction.
Large trees
Other than the wall trees and the registered Old and Valuable Trees, the Corporation also endeavours to preserve large trees.

Footprint of the work site for constructing station entrance at Pok Fu Lam Road was reduced to minimize any possible impact on large trees nearby.

Minimizing impacts on trees, especially large trees, has been a design consideration. If removal of trees is unavoidable, transplanting or replanting the trees after construction in the Central & Western District is will be carried out.
