The issuance of the Corporate Safety Policy and establishment of the Corporate Safety Management Committee in May 2006 consolidated safety management across operations and businesses under a formalised governance framework. The Committee oversees policy changes, establishes the procedures, and implements relevant standards specific to growing business needs. This leads to the seamless transfer of consistent safety management to the front-line of all business activities.
Stringent targets are set annually for managing safety and operational requirements. The Integrated Management System (IMS) oversees the key areas of system safety and occupational safety and health, aligning to external OHSAS 18001 certification. During 2007, the operating railway sustained its overall excellent track record in safety performance.
Safety management specific to staff, functions under various programmes under the Integrated Management System (IMS) and through other division-specific procedures. These programmes are compliant to the Hong Kong Labour Ordinance and where relevant, to local laws in our operations outside Hong Kong.

The Work/Life Balance programme was established in 2005. This well-received programme supports staff in coping with stress at the workplace and aids in bringing quality into their working life. Supporting this programme is an intranet web page posting tips on health issues, seminars and corporate activities that address the more specific workplace issues. Additionally, professional counselling and a 24-hour hotline manned by qualified social workers are available for staff and their immediate family members for individual consultation.
We offer staff a variety of facilities and activities for employees and their families and guests to enjoy themselves outside of the workplace. The Metro Recreation Club offers a variety of sporting and leisure activities for staff. We also make available a wide range of personal development programmes and encourage staff participation in volunteering.
