LEADING THE WAY

In 2003, MTR achieved a number of significant milestones in corporate responsibility. A selection of these are presented below and discussed in greater detail in subsequent sections of the report.

• Continued inclusion in the two leading global sustainability indexes, the Dow Jones Sustainability Index and FTSE4Good.

• Maintaining the certification of MTR's Project and Operations Divisions to ISO14001, the international standard for environmental management systems.

• Initiated a review of the Code of Conduct and an audit on the compliance to Corporate policies.

• Achieving 23 of the 24 quantitative performance targets established by Project and Operations Divisions during development of the ISO14001 environmental management system (See Environment Section).

• Continued implementation of the recommendations made in the 4th Staff Attitude Survey to encourage staff development at the middle management level and the undertaking of a further Staff Attitude Survey 2003 (See Social Responsibility Section).

• Establishment of the Sustainability Advisory Board for the Tung Chung - Ngong Ping Cable Car (See Social Responsibility Section).

• Continued commitment as signatory to the World Economic Forum Corporate Citizenship Initiative, placing corporate governance and social issues at the highest levels of management.

• Participation in the second phase of the Impacts of Reporting Project being undertaken by AccountAbility in the UK (see detail ).

• Continued leadership for and implementation of the UITP's (Union of International Transport Providers) Charter on Sustainable Development (see detail).

• Organizational Stakeholder of and regional leadership for the Global Reporting Initiative.

• Winner of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) Hong Kong's first Environmental Reporting Award.

• Gold Award for Environmental Reporting from Business in the Environment Council, Hong Kong.

• Runner up for the Environmental Excellence Award at the Asia Corporate Social Responsibility Forum 2003.
