Our reputation for best practice in rail transport and our hybrid business model of rail + property attracts global interest from industry, professional bodies and government representatives from across Asia, the Middle East and Europe. Regular visits cover information sharing with our experts and the personal experience of the MTR system in operation.

We view sustainability as a corporate-wide endeavour and seek systematically to embed international processes, standards and best practice across the organisation and with our business partners. To this end we have maintained ISO14001 certification and make it standard practice to employ and transfer innovative technologies in our projects. We have also undertaken as part of our international business portfolio training consultancy in rail operations and maintence to embed long-term sustainability for the rail operators who engage our services.

We are active members of the annual CoMET KPI (Key Performance Indicator) Report, which compares performance of metros in the areas of customers, internal processes, safety and finance. Of the 11-member group comprising the world's largest metropolitan railways that participated in the report, we have ranked consistently amongst the top three performers. In 2003 we were named the most densely utilised railway in the world. In 2004 our average 2.4 million passengers per weekday exceeded this 2003 record.

Innovative technologies
Continuous improvement in technologies embraces both the leading edge of high-tech systems and the internal processes that bring innovation to the workplace and our services. On the hi-tech front, recent advances in the scope of the Octopus card applications move beyond rail into areas such as building and office access security systems, retail purchasing and personalised identification systems. Such innovations and their application to local markets lend advantage when securing international and mainland PRC projects.

Technologies at the operating front are monitored with a view for continuous improvement. The series of train incidents causing service disruptions over a short period of time during 2004 is a case in point. The integrity of our existing recovery systems and emergency procedures to handle these incidents was confirmed and up to standard targets set. However, under the recommendations of an internal task force set up to review the causes of these incidents combined with the recommendations tabled by the independently commissioned Lloyd's Report, we have implemented an advanced programme of remedial actions, most of which will have been completed or enacted by the end of this year.

Awards and recognition
The awards we receive, while honouring our strengths, also benchmark our industry and corporate performance. From these we learn and develop our skills. We are recognised consistently in the areas of human resources management and training, corporate business practices, environmental programmes and sustainable best practice. In 2004, we were honoured by our city's younger population as the most socially responsible listed company in Hong Kong in a survey conducted amongst local tertiary-level students.

Our executive directors and senior management pointedly participate in worldwide public forums that promote best practice. We are active members in several industry organisations, most notably taking a leadership role in the 2003 inaugurated UITP Charter on Sustainable Development , which is specific to our rail industry practices. To stay abreast of global market trends and experience, we belong to several broader business organisations. Among them are the UITP, WEF, the International Council of Shopping Centres and selected international Chambers of Commerce.

The Corporation as a public company is recognised internationally for its business acumen and industry leadership. The MTRCL is a member of the DJSI, the FSTE4Good and Ethibel Indices as well being included in the global MSCI and FSTE.

Among our most distinguished awards in 2004 were inclusion in the top 100 companies of the Global Reporters 2004 survey, the Good People Management Award from the Hong Kong SAR Government, given for the third consecutive time, the Top Service Award 2004 - Public Transport, presented by Next Magazine, and the 2003 Eco-Business Gold Award for Best Environmental Reporting from the Hong Kong Environmental Campaign Committee. We also we awarded in May this year the 2003 Best Report for Sustainability by the Hong Kong Chapter of the ACCA .
