The Steering Committee (Sustainability and CSR) supervises the engagement process through which initiatives that build internal capability and community investment are facilitated.

Several programmes involving staff health and well-being, career support and workplace environmental practices are in progress. Interactive media including a purpose-built intranet, topical web casts and team training courses provide the guidance and skills to promote the sustainability culture internally. These augment ongoing programmes including the WIT, Staff Suggestion Scheme, "Service from the Heart" and "Year of the Customer". Each programme encourages and rewards an individual's talent and resourcefulness in achieving continual improvement at the workplace.

The journey of continual improvement

Our working ethos with contractors and suppliers for best practice stems from our own history of sustainability. It is a progressive journey implemented over years to arrive at the mind set we work under today. Early years of operations focused on safety for the system, staff and passengers. Progressively, quality replaced our goal for system and services performance. Environmental stewardship across the organisation directed our working ethos over the last decade and now, we employ sustainable best practice as our guide for competitive advantage. Through our own understanding of the diffulties to achieve this progressive approach to work practices we are able to partner with our contractors and suppliers in a cooperative and evolving work environment.

MTR supported and participated in the Community Business Work Life Balance study in October 2006 to benchmark our internal similar initiatives. This survey, guided by Community Business and undertaken by Hong Kong University was the first time a study of this nature has been conducted in Hong Kong and based on a random telephone survey of 1,519 employees.
