Beijing Metro Line The Beijing Metro Line 4 (BJL4) represents a major step in our internationalisation strategy. Building on our world-class reputation in planning, developing and operating mass transit systems, the Corporation and its partners, the Beijing Capital Group and Beijing Infrastructure Investment Company Limited, established mainland China's first Public-Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement for the development and operation of metro systems. This ground-breaking arrangement provides the Corporation with the opportunity to do what we do best while mitigating the substantial financial and patronage risks identified in the early stages of feasibility.
Under a 30-year operating franchise, the Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) contract allows the Corporation the opportunity to integrate sustainable best practices into the lifecycle of the project. Utilising our knowledge in project development, we have improved the buildability of the rail-line system and stations by participating in the early planning and design stages, including those areas controlled by our partners in the major civil works. Our efforts have improved the back-of-house railway operations in terms of rolling stock utilisation and maintenance, safety and integrity of the system and depot efficiencies. At the customer interface level, we have reworked the design of the stations and customer services through better space utilisation, full-height platform screen doors installation and better manpower planning for operational efficiencies. At the broader community level, our expertise is helping to educate relevant government departments on the importance of detailed planning and design for rail systems, addressing the wider issues for integration of all transport modes and how rail networks and town planning need the coordination and cooperation among departments.
When completed, BJL4 will be a primary north to south subway artery line for greater Beijing Metro system. This 29-kilometre line connects major commercial, residential, educational and tourism districts, forming a major transport route across the heart of Beijing City. The Line's 24 stations includes 10 interchange stations to facilitate access to the greater city metro lines currently in use or in progressive stages of development.
