1. Comply
with all relevant environmental laws or, in the absence of legislation, seek
out and observe accepted best international practice as appropriate. |
¡P The Operations Division will comply with all relevant regulatory and
legislative requirements in Hong Kong as set down under the Divisional
EMS. Where such laws are not
explicit, Operations Division will adopt best practices based on
international or other known environmental standards including international protocols,
treaties and conventions. ¡P The Operations Division will: * Actively seek to minimise
the use of resources, wherever practical and cost effective. *
As part of the process of minimising use of resources, implement
pollution prevention practices where possible. |

2. Employ a corporate-wide Environmental
Management System (EMS) to continuously monitor and manage environmental
impacts, and to conduct regular reviews on the range of environmental issues
that require monitoring. |
¡P The Operations Division will integrate sound environmental management
practices with existing systems such as safety and quality management
systems. ¡P The Operations Division will set up procedures to manage environmental
complaints both from internal and external parties. |

3.
Conduct Environmental Impact Assessments for new projects, where
required by law and suggested by best practice, and implement the
recommendations. |
¡P The Operations Division
will comply with all relevant regulatory and legislative requirements in Hong

4. Ensure that
contractors and partners will implement any recommendation to achieve
acceptable environmental standards, train and encourage all our suppliers to
adopt environmentally acceptable practices in the products and services
provided. |
The
Operations Division will implement codes of good environmental practice for
all members of the Operations Division staff and contractors. |

5.
Educate and train staff in environmental matters and raise their
environmental awareness. |
¡P The Operations Division will ensure that the environment is regarded
by all staff as a core concern in the Corporation¡¦s business. ¡P The Operations Division will conduct training programmes to brief and
educate staff in environmental matters both during induction and as ongoing
practice. |

6.
Educate passengers, legislators, opinion makers and the general public
on the environmental benefits of railways. |
The
Operations Division will seek to promulgate the Division¡¦s Environmental Policy
consistent with the Corporate Environmental Profile outlined in the
Divisional EMS. |

7.
Set environmental performance goals, arrange regular third-party
environmental audits and publish the results with the aim of continuous
improvement. |
¡P Operations Division¡¦s objectives and targets will be set according to
the principles of SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Results oriented
and Time bound) ¡P As part of the Operations Division¡¦s commitment to continual
improvement and the reduction of its environmental impacts, the Division will
strive to achieve its environmental objectives and targets during the
operation and maintenance of the railway on a year to year basis. |
