Thousands of race walkers took to the streets of Central on 18 April 2010 amid cheering crowds and a festive atmosphere for MTR HONG KONG Race Walking 2010.
Now in its sixth year, the event attracted over 1,400 participants in 18 race categories, including the newly-added 3km Walk. The Men's and Women's Elite race welcomed distinguished race walkers from Australia, China, Japan, Malaysia and Korea, with the latter joining the event for the first time. More than 40 business and community leaders, together with MTR HONG KONG Race Walking Ambassadors Ms Olivia Cheng and Mr Alex Fong, stepped up to join Dr Raymond K F Ch'ien, Chairman of the MTR Corporation, in the friendly MTR Chairman's Invitational race.
Cheering teams on both sides of Chater Road kept walkers' spirits high every step of the way. Many were dressed up in fun and colourful costumes, further adding to the festive atmosphere.
Since 2005, the MTR Corporation and Hong Kong Amateur Athletic Association have joined hands to organise the largest race walking competition in Hong Kong to enhance the public's awareness on the health benefits of walking and raise funds to promote healthy living. In 2010, over HK$ 1.13 million has been raised for the Hospital Authority Health InfoWorld to support its work on disease prevention and health education.
