Contributing to Society

MTR enables community development by linking people to each other and to the places they enjoy. We carefully design our railway and property development to accommodate different needs for attaining a productive, healthy and happy lifestyle. Our people-oriented approach to development maximises land use and encourages the use of convenient and efficient mass transit reducing the reliance on road traffic. Building with a long time horizon in mind, MTR aims to be a good corporate citizen and leverage our skills, resources, and networks to help communities thrive as they transform both in terms of infrastructure and human capital.

MTR connects and grows communities to create a positive and inclusive environment in which individuals and groups can thrive and enjoy a quality lifestyle in liveable cities. Throughout the development of new lines and properties integrated into our network, we listen to our surrounding communities to ensure we are able to fulfil their needs as much as possible. Community Liaison Groups established during the construction of new lines provide a dialogue channel through which we can regularly communicate progress and construction impacts of our projects with the local community. We understand the changing lifestyle aspirations of our society, and as such, we seek to meet community expectations further through our property developments. We also continue to explore new opportunities to connect and grow communities which are currently underserved by an efficient mass transportation system.

We are an integral part of our communities, therefore we are committed to contributing to the development of the communities in which we operate. Through our Community Connect platform, we host and support various community and charitable programmes supporting various social segments such as youth, women and the elderly, while our More Time Reaching Community programme encourages our employees to contribute their own time to organise and participate in volunteer activities. We continue to work on youth empowerment programmes. The .;Train・ for Life・s Journeys・ programme has entered its 9th year, providing soft skill training and job tasting opportunities for 170 youngsters during their summer vacation. We also support young people as they transition to the workplace through the Pathways to Employment Programme and give them a voice as our .consultants・ through the Youth Forum. We give ongoing support to community organisations by offering free use of our advertising spaces to help raise awareness on important issues affecting our society. In addition, through the NGO & Social Enterprise Support Programme twelve retail shops along the West Rail Line have been made available to businesses run by eligible NGOs or social enterprises at a concessionary monthly licence fee of just HK$1,500 with nine of these shops opened for business in 2017.

Building Communities

Maritime Square 2, since its completion, has become a new focal point in Tsing Yi. Inspired by the residents・ aspirations for convenience and more open space, MTR has worked to improve the existing Public Transport Interchange from an isolated underused space into a decked over and linked up space with pedestrian connections as well as an approximately 5,000 square metres podium landscape garden.

STEM Challenge

With the goals of encouraging students to discover how things work, and increasing their desire to explore STEM subjects, MTR launched STEM Challenge in 2017. Designed and supported by Junior Achievement Hong Kong, Hong Kong EdCity and The Association for Computer Education, the programme aims to encourage secondary-school students to stay curious about the world around them, and heighten their interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) subjects.
