Contract CT149-21E – Provision of Distributed Communications System (DCS) Network for 5G Services

Cabling work at tunnel during NTH
Installed trackside 5G equipment
Project Description
All MTR stations were currently covered by 5G services. Since 2024, the MTR Corporation has been collaborating with the four local mobile network operators to further enhance the 5G mobile network with the aim of increasing transmission speed and network capacity.
Installation works for 3.3 GHz and 3.5 GHz indoor base stations have commenced at 24 MTR stations to upgrade network capacity and performance. As of the end of April 2026, upgrade works have been completed at 17 stations—namely Hong Kong (HOK), Kowloon (KOW), Central (CEN), Admiralty (ADM), Wan Chai (WAC), Causeway Bay (CAB), Tin Hau (TIH), Tsim Sha Tsui (TST), North Point (NOP), Quarry Bay (QUB), Yau Ma Tei (YMT), Prince Edward (PRE), Cheung Sha Wan (CSW), Lai Chi Kok (LCK), Wong Tai Sin (WTS), Diamond Hill (DIH), and Yau Tong (YAT) - along with their associated tunnels. These locations have been new equipped with the 5G "Golden Spectrum.""
Upgrade works for the remaining seven stations including Mei Foo (MEF - TWL), Lai King (LAK- TWL), Tsing Yi (TSY), Kowloon Tong (KOT - KTL), Lok Fu (LOF), Lam Tin (LAT), and Tiu Keng Leng (TIK)—and their associated tunnels are currently in progress. These are scheduled for completion between 2026 and 2027.
Passengers traveling through upgraded stations and connected tunnels can enjoy faster, more stable mobile connectivity, even during peak hours. The Corporation is also exploring further upgrades for additional MTR stations in collaboration with the mobile network operators.
