Art in MTR

community connect

We are committed to enriching the environment of Hong Kong through making our stations beautiful and inspiring spaces for commuters. Since 1998, we have been introducing eye-catching sculptures, installations and mosaics into the design of our station architecture.

Inspiration at Every Station

We have been working with established local and international artists since 1998 and today our stations are home to over 70 works by talents from Hong Kong, Australia, Mainland China, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, Taiwan, the UK and the USA. After almost two decades of successfully integrating beautiful and thought-provoking works into our stations, we’re looking to expand the programme and find even more imaginative ways to bring art into more corners of the city.

Our Central Station also provides a year-round exhibition space for constantly changing two and three-dimensional works and displays by artists from Hong Kong and around the world. This exciting space offers commuters and others a chance to celebrate Hong Kong’s cultural heritage while contemplating its exciting future through the power of art. We are also making space available in our malls to promote the work of up-and-coming artists and designers.

Showcasing Community Talent

Our Sheung Wan and Sai Wan Ho stations both offer amateur artists, schools and non-profit-making organisations an incredible opportunity to display their original work in a public setting. Through mediums ranging from calligraphy and weaving to photography and hard-crafted artworks, the space not only provides a venue to raise awareness of different causes, it supports young artists looking to raise their profile while nurturing a love of art in and across the community.

We’re also proud to support dedicated Community Art Galleries. These exciting spaces began simply enough when, in February 2000, MTR converted the two footbridges adjoining Lam Tin Station into a vibrant display area for paintings and drawings from the local community. This first exhibition included works by neighbourhood school students and talented artists from various charities.

Today, there are over 60 Community Art Galleries throughout the MTR railway system, where people from all walks of life and from different parts of the community can come together to display their talents and enjoy the work of others.

If you’d like to take part in one of our Community Art Galleries, simply submit the application form in the link below directly to the relevant MTR station. You can find out more about the programme’s terms and conditions in the links below and if you’d like to make any further enquiries, you can call the MTR hotline (2881 8888).
