Step Your Way to Health

Exercising can be as easy as taking the MTR. As part of MTR Corporation's continuous commitment to promote healthy living in Hong Kong, the Corporation is partnering with the Department of Health to promote the health benefits of stair climbing.

Passengers passing through 92 MTR stations (except Airport, AsiaWorld-Expo, Disneyland Resort, Racecourse, Lo Wu, Lok Ma Chau and Hong Kong West Kowloon stations) may notice signs posted along below staircase located near one of the busiest escalators or a lift in each station. The signs show the number of steps in the staircase. They aim to encourage passengers to walk up and down the steps rather than to take the nearby escalator or lift.

 

Climbing stairs regularly will:

• Build up body strength and cardiovascular endurance.
• Enhance heart and lung function and improve blood circulation.
• Reduce the risk of developing coronary heart disease, hypertension, diabetes and colon cancer.
• Increase body resistance, thus reduce the chance of contracting disease and help to increase work efficiency.
• Lead to healthy bones and lower risk of osteoporosis
• Strengthen muscle
• Decrease body fat, thereby maintain a healthy body weight
