Local characteristics and influences of Tsuen Wan and Kwai Tsing districts are being brought to life in intriguing and unexpected ways in the latest "art in mtr - roving art" exhibition. Entitled "Tsuen Wan, Kwai Tsing - Culture & Arts Fun Feast in Towns and Hakka Villages", the exhibition opened today (15 November 2012) at MTR Sheung Wan Station.

A photo installation depicts how melon seeds are prepared for sale; discarded wood is turned into distinctive animal sculpture; stencil prints and photo collage explore aspects of unique rural life that are fast disappearing.

The artworks are created by secondary school and tertiary students who were guided by established artists Mr Wong Tin-yan, Ms Ivy Ma and the art duo GraphicAirlines as part of the "Hong Kong Jockey Club Heritage x Arts x Design Walk" project organised by HULU Culture, a local non-profit group, and funded by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust.

"This is a fascinating exhibit. It speaks to the city's past and to how quickly Hong Kong has grown. It also tells an exciting story about the creative abilities of our younger generations. These works are a great example of the type of community art project that we want to bring into our stations for our passengers to appreciate and enjoy," said Mr Jay Walder, Chief Executive Officer of MTR Corporation.

"The exhibition is the result of an exciting collaboration between young artists and students to explore our cultural heritage. Although these pieces were inspired by what the students saw and learned about in Tsuen Wan and Kwai Tsing districts, they carry a relevance that can be viewed in a wider context by everyone in the city. That's why we are very happy to be able to show the students' works in the MTR," said Mr Simon Go, Project Director of HULU Culture.

The "art in mtr - roving art" exhibition at Sheung Wan Station will run until 2 January 2013. It will then move to MTR Tiu Keng Leng Station for display from 5 January to 4 February 2013.
