As the Year of the Snake approaches, MTR will be launching a new set of CNY tickets on 12 January 2025. The two tickets feature, respectively, former MTR architect Abe Au’s Chinese calligraphic art and local comic artist Li Chi-tak’s reinterpretation of the comic My Boy. With the tickets, passengers can enjoy unlimited domestic rides1 on MTR on the first day of the Year of the Snake (29 January 2025).
Since the Year of the Rabbit in 2023, MTR has invited Mr Abe Au to design one of the CNY tickets each year. His brush strokes, which can be found in many MTR stations depicting the station names, are an integral part of MTR station art and familiar sights for passengers. For the new ticket set, Mr Au has written the Chinese character “snake” in his distinctive style.
Meanwhile, following the collaboration last year on the 45th Anniversary Themed Train, MTR has teamed up with comic artist Li Chi-tak again to create one of the CNY tickets. Like the themed train, Li came up with a design based on the comic My Boy, originally created by cartoonist Wong Sze-ma in the 1970s-80s. The design depicts a playful interaction between the comic’s endearing character and a golden snake, symbolising an energetic Year of the Snake.
Both Au’s calligraphy and the comic My Boy are precious parts of local history, bearing witness to the development of Hong Kong and its railway network. While preserving local culture, the two designs of the CNY ticket set will strike a chord with locals in different ways.
The ticket set comes with eight red packets written with the Lunar New Year greeting "peace and good fortune" in Chinese and printed with an adorable My Boy illustration, perfect for giving to family and friends to share your well wishes and a piece of local culture.
