MTR will launch a new Chinese zodiac commemorative ticket set on 1 February 2026 to ring in the Year of the Horse. This time, the two tickets feature the calligraphic work of retired MTR architect Abe Au Kit Tong and an illustration by local artist Joe Wong Man Hon. With the tickets, passengers can enjoy unlimited MTR domestic journeys1 on the first day of the upcoming Lunar New Year (17 February 2026).
Since 2023, MTR has invited Mr Abe Au to create original calligraphy for the Lunar New Year ticket series. Mr Au is known for creating the calligraphic station name signs that can be found on many MTR platforms. His iconic brushwork is not only familiar to Hongkongers but also forms an integral part of MTR station art. Continuing the beloved tradition, Mr Au has written the Chinese character “Horse” for this year’s CNY ticket set.
Echoing the elegance of Abe Au’s inkwork is the lifelike steed created by local paper artist and designer Joe Wong. Dressed in an auspicious shade of red, with a flowing mane and lively tail, Mr Wong’s horse radiates vitality and festive charm. Subtle motifs of peach blossoms, plum blossoms and peonies are woven into the artwork to provide delicate details, symbolising a year of bold strides and a successful journey ahead.
Mr Au’s calligraphy has accompanied generations of Hongkongers and witnessed the city’s railway evolve, while Mr Wong’s art breathes heartfelt blessings into the Year of the Horse. Together, their works come to life on the new commemorative ticket set, celebrating life and Hong Kong’s rich local culture.
Each ticket set also comes with 10 red packets featuring the two Chinese zodiac signs that represent vigour and energy – the horse and the dragon – perfect for sharing New Year blessings with family and friends.
