MTR’s Journey with the Nature

MTR’s Journey with the Nature

Nature is an invaluable asset and indispensable to our everyday lives. MTR Corporation shares our community’s love for the environment and natural resources. Therefore, in railway operations and development, we always strive to serve you in a sustainable way.

Water Recycling

Water is essential to our lives. We all have to play our part in conserving water resources. Apart from recycling water to clean trains, MTR Corporation also reuses domestic wastewater for washing trains again or for use in some toilets flush in depots. The grey water recycling system in LOHAS Park also collects grey water for re-use in landscaping and the cleaning of outdoor public areas.

Tree Preservation

Many research studies show that seeing greenery can improve our physical and mental health. In light of this, when planning the Kennedy Town Station development, we carefully re-routed the railway line and relocated the station to preserve the historical stonewall trees on Forbes Street. Trees along the railway lines are also given "ID Cards" to monitor their health continuously so as to minimize the risk of tree collapse. Our dedicated personnel participate in a large-scale tree survey for over 33,000 trees on an ongoing basis.

Birds Conservation

A place with a bird-song is a happy place. Since the merger in 2007, MTR Corporation continued to collaborate with experts to manage the 32-hectare Lok Ma Chau Wetland to maintain biodiversity and facilitate ecological enhancements. Since then, there has been an increment of almost 40 bird species. The Lok Ma Chau Wetland is now a habitat of over 260 bird species, accounting for about half of the birds species recorded in Hong Kong.
