Travel Smart with the correct ticket!

Every day, over 5 million passenger journeys are made on the MTR. Using the correct ticket is your key to a smooth journey

To help you enjoy a comfortable travel experience, we’ve prepared some useful tips for you to understand how to use tickets properly

Correct Use of Tickets – MTR Lines


MTR fares are divided into Adult and Concessionary. Please select the appropriate ticket based on your eligibility

Tip 1: Use the correct ticket

  • Concessionary Single Journey Ticket: only for use by children aged 3-11 and seniors aged 65 or above
  • Eligible Students / Hong Kong Seniors aged 60-64 / Persons with Disabilities: must use a registered Personal Octopus encoded with their valid status to enjoy concessionary fares

    If you do not have your eligible Personal Octopus with you, please purchase an Adult ticket

Tip 2: Pay Attention to gate signals

  • Keep a safe distance from the person in front when entering the gate to ensure your ticket is read properly
  • After tapping or scanning, listen for the "beep" sound and check the green light. If you have a problem, please contact station staff immediately

Tip 3: Ticket Inspection

  • MTR staff may randomly carry out ticket inspections at gates or inside train compartments. Please follow instructions and present your valid ticket
  • Passengers without a valid ticket* will be liable to a surcharge of HK$1,000 or prosecution

    *Including QR Code Tickets or Single Journey Tickets not validated by the gate machine; and Octopus or Contactless Bank Cards not validated by the First Class processor.

Correct Use of Tickets – East Rail Line First-Class


East Rail Line offers both Standard Class and First Class compartments. First Class gives you extra comfort and flexibility for your journey with more spacious seating

To travel in First Class you must pay a First Class premium, equal to the full adult fare of the corresponding East Rail Line journey

Tip 1: Purchasing and validating First Class tickets

  • Octopus or Contactless Bank Card: Before boarding, obtain First Class Validation at the First Class Processor with the same Octopus or Contactless Bank Card used to enter station
  • Single Journey Ticket / QR Code Ticket: Select “First Class” when purchasing your ticket. Once purchased, the ticket type cannot be changed
  • If you do not have a valid First Class ticket, please travel in Standard Class


Tip 2: Ticket inspection and rules

  • No upgrade service is available inside First Class compartments
  • MTR staff may carry out ticket checks at any time. Please present your valid First Class ticket when requested
  • Passengers travelling First Class without a valid First Class ticket* will be liable to a surcharge of HK$1,000 or prosecution

    *Including QR Code Tickets or Single Journey Tickets not validated by the gate machine; and Octopus or Contactless Bank Cards not validated by the First Class processor.

Correct Use of Tickets – Light Rail


Passengers may use an Octopus or a valid Light Rail Single Journey Ticket to travel on the Light Rail. Passengers wishing to pay subsidised fares must hold and use an eligible personalised Octopus encoded with their status

Tip 1: Use a Valid Ticket

  • Passengers can use either an Octopus or a Light Rail Single Journey ticket to travel on the Light Rail
  • Before boarding, you must tap your card at the “Entry Fare Processor”, and complete your journey within 2 hours. Remember to tap your card again at the “Exit Fare Processor” when you leave
  • Concessional fares are available for:
    - Children (aged 3-11)
    - Senior Citizens (aged 65 or above)
  • Students aged 12 and above, senior citizens aged 60-64, or persons with disabilities who do not present an eligible personalised Octopus encoded with their status will be charged the adult fare


Tip 2: Light Rail Fare Information

  • First payment: After tapping your Octopus at the entrance, you may only travel in one direction to your destination
  • Second payment (return journey): If you need to return along the same route, you must tap your Octopus again
  • Second payment (circular routes): When taking a circular route that returns to or passes through the same station, you must reconfirm with your Octopus or purchase an additional ticket


Tip 3: Ticket Inspection

  • MTR staff may randomly carry out ticket inspections on platforms or inside the Light Rail train compartment. Please follow their instructions and present your valid ticket
  • Passengers without a valid ticket will be liable to a surcharge of HK$370 or prosecution
