MTR Student Travel Scheme (Academic year 2016 / 2017)

Students of schools participating in the MTR Student Travel Scheme Online Application can apply for a Personalised Octopus with "Student Status" or to Activate or Renew the "Student Status" on their existing Personalised Octopus through this web page.

We are pleased to inform you that the MTR will continue to offer MTR concessionary fares to eligible full time day course students studying in a recognised institution in Hong Kong in the academic year 2016 / 2017.

Students who do not already possess a Personalised Octopus (with name and photo printed on the Octopus), have to apply for a Personalised Octopus with "Student Status".

  • The application fee for a Personalised Octopus with :Student Status; is HK$90. The application fee includes the Octopus deposit of HK$50; a non-refundable fee of HK$20 charged by MTR Corporation Limited for administering the MTR Student Travel Scheme; and a non-refundable service charge of HK$20 payable to Octopus Cards Limited.
  • A special rebate of HK$20 will be offered to FIRST TIME APPLICANTS# for a Personalised Octopus with "Student Status". The rebate will be given in the form of HK$20 usable value encoded on the processed Octopus.

Eligibility

An applicant for a Personalised Octopus must be a student under the following definitions:

"Student" refers to any person between the ages of 12 and 25 who is currently enrolled in a full-time day course offered by an acceptable institution in Hong Kong. Students who have not yet reached 26 may apply. An applicant's age is determined by the time at which the application is submitted.

"Full-time day course" refers to a day-time course, which normally requires the participant to attend an acceptable institution for not less than 20 hours of academic instruction each week for 30 weeks or more in an academic year.

"Acceptable institution" refers to :
  • schools referred to in Section 2 of the Education Ordinance (Cap279);
  • registered schools that fall under Section 3 of the Education Ordinance (Cap279);
  • schools exempted from the Education Ordinance (Cap279) under sections 9(1)(a) and (b);
  • the word school is defined in Section 3 of the Education Ordinance (Cap279);
  • other schools as occasionally approved by the MTR Corporation;
  • private schools offering non-formal curriculum registered under the Education Ordinance (Cap279) are not included.

Enjoying concessionary fares when travelling on the MTR

An adult fare must be paid by any student aged 12 or above when travelling on the MTR without :

  • using a Personalised Octopus with valid "Student Status", or
  • using a 'Temporary Student Octopus' with a receipt / proof issued by the MTR showing their application for "Student Status" is being processed and a Student Identity Card (valid for the academic year 2016 / 2017)

Concessionary Single Journey Tickets are invalid for students aged 12 or above. Students may only use a Personalised Octopus with "Student Status" if they wish to benefit from paying concessionary fares in the MTR (Airport Express, East Rail Line First Class or MTR Feeder Bus; or travel to Lo Wu, or Lok Ma Chau stations are not included).

The "Student Status" encoded on a Personalised Octopus is valid for MTR travel only. Users of Personalised Octopus (including aged 12 or under) encoded with "Student Status" are reminded when they travel on any non-MTR transportation with this Octopus, they are liable to the individual terms and conditions of the respective transport provider and may be charged full adult fare though they are 12 or under.

A special add-value amount of HK$10 in each transaction is available at all MTR Customer Service Centres for students who have a Personalised Octopus encoded with "Student Status".

Report loss of a Personalised Octopus with "Student Status"
  • If your Octopus is lost or stolen, you must report it immediately to the Card Company by calling the Lost Octopus Reporting Hotline on 2266 2266. You may ask for a replacement Octopus to be issued.
  • If you want to continue to enjoy concessionary fares while waiting for the replacement Octopus, you must go to any MTR Customer Service Centre (except Airport Express stations, Lo Wu, Lok Ma Chau, Racecourse, Disneyland Resort and Sunny Bay stations) to purchase a 'Temporary Student Octopus' and obtain temporary proof of your "Student Status". Whenever you are travelling on the MTR with a 'Temporary Student Octopus', the temporary proof of "Student Status" and a Student Identity Card (valid for the academic year 2016 / 2017) must also be carried at all times, until the replacement Personalised Octopus with "Student Status" has been issued. Failure to carry the 'Temporary Student Octopus' receipt could result in the imposition of a surcharge if your 'Temporary Student Octopus' is inspected at any time.
Purchase of a 'Temporary Student Octopus'

You can purchase a .Temporary Student Octopus・ for travel during the processing period. The purchase fee for the .Temporary Student Octopus・ is HK$70 which includes the Octopus deposit of HK$50 and HK$20 usable value. The .Temporary Student Octopus・ can be returned / refunded when the new Octopus is collected or the "Student Status" is Activated / Renewed. Any .Temporary Student Octopus・ that is lost will not be replaced.

Late application or Student transfer

Students who transfer to another school, or who would like to submit a late application may obtain an application form from any MTR Customer Service Centre* or the Concessionary Travel Office in Admiralty, Tai Wai or Siu Hong stations, or download a form from this web page.

Termination of studies / Change in Personal data
  • If you cease to be a full-time day course student, your "Student Status" becomes invalid. You must immediately contact the MTR Hotline.

Application for Activation / Renewal of "Student Status" on a Personalised Octopus - Individual Applications

Reminder:
  • If your "Student Status" expires on 31 October 2016 and is not Renewed, full adult fares will be deducted from your Personalised Octopus when you travel on the MTR.
  • "Student Status" cannot be encoded on Airport Staff Octopus or Personalised Octopus with "Persons with Disabilities Status" or Octopus watches or Personalised Octopus printed only with the applicant's name but no photo.
Application fee

An administration fee of HK$20 is payable when your Octopus is successfully Activated / Renewed. A receipt will be issued when payment is received.

Form distribution

Obtain an application form [MTR Student Travel Scheme Application Form (Academic year 2016 / 2017) - Individual Application] from your school or any MTR Customer Service Centre* or the Concessionary Travel Office in Admiralty, Tai Wai or Siu Hong stations, or download a form from this web page.

Submission of application form

Submit the endorsed application form within 14 days to any MTR Customer Service Centre*. If your Personalised Octopus already has "Student Status", put your form into the designated collection box next to the MTR Customer Service Centre* (in use between 1 September and 14 October 2016).

If your Personalised Octopus does not have "Student Status", submit your form to the MTR Customer Service Centre* where a receipt will be issued. You can present the receipt to buy a "Temporary Student Octopus". Whenever you travel on the MTR with a "Temporary Student Octopus", the receipt and your Student Identity Card (valid for the academic year 2016 / 2017) must be carried at all times. Failure to carry the 'Temporary Student Octopus' receipt could result in the imposition of a surcharge if your 'Temporary Student Octopus' is inspected at any time.

To Activate / Renew the "Student Status" on your Personalised Octopus

Please go in person to Activate / Renew your "Student Status" at any MTR Customer Service Centre* according to the schedule below.

Application for a Personalised Octopus with "Student Status" - Individual Applications

Reminder:

From September 2016, students who do not possess a Personalised Octopus (with name and photo printed on the Octopus) and who wish to enjoy MTR concessionary fares, must apply for a Personalised Octopus with "Student Status".

Application fee

The application fee of HK$90 includes the Octopus deposit of HK$50; a non-refundable fee of HK$20 charged by MTR Corporation Limited for administering the MTR Student Travel Scheme; and a non-refundable service charge of HK$20 payable to Octopus Cards Limited.

FIRST TIME APPLICANTS# for a Personalised Octopus with "Student Status" will receive a rebate of the service charge paid to Octopus Cards Limited in the form of HK$20 usable value encoded on the processed Octopus.

If your Personalised Octopus is given back to the Card Company at any time, the Card Company is entitled to deduct HK$10 or such amount at its absolute discretion from the Octopus deposit to cover the Octopus cost.

Submission of application form

Submit the endorsed application form with photo and application fee to any MTR Customer Service Centre* within 14 days.

A receipt will be issued when you submit your application form. This receipt serves as temporary proof of your application for "Student Status". You can present the receipt to buy a 'Temporary Student Octopus'. Whenever you are travelling on the MTR with a 'Temporary Student Octopus', the receipt and your Student Identity Card (academic year 2016 / 2017) must be carried at all times.

New Octopus Collection Arrangement
  • If a parent of the applicant collects the Personalised Octopus with "Student Status", the parent should present the receipt and a copy of the applicant's identification document [Hong Kong Identity Card or Passport or 2016 / 2017 Student Identity Card or Student handbook] along with his / her (the parent's) Hong Kong Identity Card or Passport for verification.
  • If the applicant delegates the collection of the Personalised Octopus with "Student Status" to any other person, he / she should provide a letter of authorization showing the applicant's and the delegate's name with Hong Kong Identity Card or Passport number along with a copy of the applicant's identification document [Hong Kong Identity Card or Passport or 2016 / 2017 Student Identity Card or Student handbook]. The delegate must also present his / her Hong Kong Identity Card or Passport as shown in the authorization letter for verification.

FAQs - Application for MTR Student Travel Scheme (Academic Year 2016 / 2017)

Submission of Application
  1. Should I apply for a Personalised Octopus with "Student Status" if I'm 12 years old and already have a Personalised Octopus with a photo?

    No. You only need to provide your Personalised Octopus number in item 2 of Part A of the application form, complete the information as required and return it to any MTR Customer Service Centre*. Please note that you are required to apply for a Personalised Octopus with "Student Status" if there is no photo printed on your Personalised Octopus.

  2. Can the "Student Status" be encoded on the Personalised Octopus with no photo?

    No. Only a Personalised Octopus with a photo can be used for the MTR Student Travel Scheme.

  3. Must the "Student Status" be Renewed every year?

    The "Student Status" is valid for a period of 1- 3 years. When the validity of your "Student Status" expires, you should apply for Renewal. You can check the validity of the "Student Status" encoded on your Personalised Octopus at any MTR Customer Service Centre* or through any Octopus Enquiry Processor at MTR stations.

  4. Can my application form for Activation / Renewal of "Student Status" only be submitted at an MTR Customer Service Centre*?

    No. If you do not need to purchase a "Temporary Student Octopus", you can drop your application form into the "MTR Student Travel Scheme" collection box at any MTR station* anytime between 1 September and 14 October.

  5. I have to repeat a school year. Do I need to apply for "Student Status" again?

    If you are an eligible applicant for the MTR Student Travel Scheme and the validity of the "Student Status" on your Personalised Octopus expires on 31 October 2016, then you need to apply to Renew your "Student Status" for the academic year 2016 / 2017. The Renewal must be completed on or before 31 October 2016.

  6. Can my Personalised Octopus which was issued when I studied in primary school be used for activating "Student Status"?

    Yes. It can be used for activating "Student Status" if it is printed with a photo.

  7. My son is under 12, but a Personalised Octopus is required by his school for administrative purposes. Is the MTR Student Travel Scheme Application Form fit for this purpose?

    No. He should obtain and complete a copy of the Application form for a Personalised Octopus which is available at any MTR Customer Service Centre*. For more details, please call the Octopus Hotline on 2266 2222.

After Submission of Application
  1. Can I buy a concessionary Single Journey Ticket to travel on the MTR if I forget to bring or I lose my Personalised Octopus with "Student Status"?

    No. You can only enjoy concessionary fares when the fare is deducted from your Personalised Octopus encoded with "Student Status" or if the fare is deducted from a "Temporary Student Octopus" and you are carrying a receipt / proof issued by MTR with your valid Student Identity Card.

  2. What should I bring for Activation / Renewal of "Student Status" on my Personalised Octopus?

    You should bring your Personalised Octopus according to the schedule stated in the application form to any MTR Customer Service Centre*. An administration fee of HK$20 is payable for the Activation / Renewal.

  3. How can I buy a "Temporary Student Octopus" if I lose my Official Receipt?

    You should check the progress of your application through the MTR Hotline on 2881 8888. If your application has been approved, you can go to any MTR Customer Service Centre* to purchase a "Temporary Student Octopus" and obtain a temporary proof of "Student Status". The Octopus costs HK$70. Any Temporary Student Octopus that is lost will not be replaced.

  4. How can I get my new Personalised Octopus with "Student Status" if I lose my Official Receipt?

    You should complete the "Ticketing Enquiry" available at our Customer Service Centre*. We can reissue an Official Receipt for you.

  5. What should I do if I transfer to another school after I submit my application form?

    You should go to any MTR Customer Service Centre* to obtain a copy of the MTR Student Travel Scheme Application Form. After completing Part B of the form, submit it to your new school for endorsement and return it to any MTR Customer Service Centre*.

  6. I replaced my Personalised Octopus after it was lost / damaged. However I have already submitted the application form for Activation / Renewal of "Student Status" on a Personalised Octopus. What should I do?

    You may call the MTR Hotline on 2881 8888, then we can update our records with your new Octopus number and notify you when to Renew your "Student Status".

  7. I want to use my own Personalised Octopus to apply for Activation / Renewal of "Student Status". However I have submitted an application for a new Personalised Octopus with "Student Status" and have paid the application fee of HK$90. How can I change my application type and obtain a refund?

    If your application has been processed by Octopus Cards Limited, the application fee of HK$90 cannot be refunded. If it has not been processed, a refund can be arranged and your application may be changed from "Application for a new Personalised Octopus with "Student Status"" to "Activation / Renewal of "Student Status"". An administration fee of HK$20 is payable at the time your Octopus is Activated / Renewed at any MTR Customer Service Centre*.

  8. Why is the stored value on my new Personalised Octopus with "Student Status" nil or HK$20 after paying the application fee of HK$90?

    The HK$90 application fee comprises of the Octopus deposit of HK$50; a non-refundable fee of HK$20 charged by MTR for administrating the MTR Student Travel Scheme; and a non-refundable service charge of HK$20 payable to Octopus Cards Limited. First time applicants will receive a rebate of the service charge paid to Octopus Cards Limited in the form of HK$20 usable value encoded on their Octopus.

  9. Why have I still not received my refund for the application fee of HK$90 after my application was rejected or withdrawn?
